Third Reich and Cold War

City walk to main historical sites of the 20th century in Berlin

This tour leads into the history of the Third Reich and goes about the end of World War II and the following Cold War. As Hitler wanted to survive some more months people had to die as civil persons, as soldiers and the murdering in concentration camps was sustained till the very end of the dictatorship. We experience the division of Berlin after the end of war and get to know about the conflicts between western and eastern sphere. The walk starts at Reichstag building and passes the Soviet War Memorial, Brandenburg Gate and Holocaust Memorial. We see the site of the bunker, which was built for Hitler and where the dictator committed suicide April 30, 1945. We explore Wilhelmstraße the former power centre of the Third Reich and see the Memorial for the victims of the uprising June 17, 1953. Original remains of the Berlin Wall are located at Niederkirchnerstraße, where Topography of Terror Documetation Center informs about persecutions during the dictatorship. At the end we visit former Checkpoint Charlie, used by foreigners to go from West to East.
